Tips for Decluttering Your Home When You're Ready to Sell
Clutter comes in many forms but with one common characteristic, all clutter slowly builds up over time, eventually obstructing what's really important. For clutter that invades your home, our agents at Cressy & Everett Real Estate have some great tips on getting your home ready to list by decluttering.
- Goal - When approaching any task, it's important to have a clear objective. Setting a goal helps keep you motivated. Are you removing clutter to help sell your home? Or do you just want to free up some space? Whatever the reason, having a well-defined goal will keep you pointed in the right direction. Visualizing your desired result will help you remain on course.
- Focus - Life is full of distractions. When it's time to tackle a project, put your blinders on. Turn off the computer; silence your phone, whatever it takes to get the job done without interruptions.
- Strategy - Create a plan. Do one room at a time, and even divide each room into sections. If you have a full closet, divide that into sections also. The more organized your plan, the greater chance of success.
- Schedule - Mark times and tasks on a calendar but make sure not to overwhelm yourself. This will only set you up for failure. If you're super busy during the week, allocate 15 minutes a night for smaller jobs like cleaning out a cabinet or junk drawer. Set aside weekends and days off for bigger jobs.
- Be Ruthless - Tossing things that have memories attached is the hardest part of decluttering. This is especially tough when it's stuff from your children like old school papers and clothing that no longer fits. But twenty years from now are you really going to look through each school paper? Or will you rifle through them looking for the paper with their hand prints on it? Make decisions based on the future you, who might be annoyed they lugged all that extra stuff around for years because the old you refused to get rid of it.
- Be Thorough - Not all clutter is big. Go through everything. Get rid of socks with no match, old make-up, towels with holes, tools you never use, pencils, pens, cans of expired soup. Weed it all out.
- Delegate - Don't go it alone. Even Ninjas have sidekicks. Getting rid of belongings can be exhausting, both physically and emotionally. Ask for help. And don't leave out the kids. They can benefit from the experience by sifting through their own belongings and putting together a bag for Goodwill.
- Perseverance - Stay committed to the project. If you're feeling burned out, give yourself a break, but also give yourself a definite time to restart.
- Maintenance - Once you've finished, keep your eye on returning clutter. It can be sneaky. Don't allow it to pile back up. Get rid of junk mail immediately; toss insignificant school papers, bag up clothing that no longer fits.
- Victory - After the clutter is finally gone, you'll feel much lighter. Your home will appear more spacious, which is a major plus if your goal is to put it on the market. It also means less stuff you'll have to move.
