Now that warm weather is finally here, it's time to get started on those long-awaited outdoor projects. Our real estate agents love working outside. Not only are outdoor projects enjoyable, but improving your home's facade is the best way to increase curb appeal and your home value. If you're looking to get a head start on some outdoor work this spring, consider these inexpensive DIY ways to improve your home:
- Stain Your Deck
Enjoying time on the deck is such a fun part of summer. Whether you're grilling, eating, or watching your kids play in the yard, the deck is a great place to spend time with friends and family. If your deck is looking a bit faded, it's probably a good time to get a jump-start on staining it. Not only does staining your deck make it new, it also increases its lifespan by protecting it from long-term sun exposure.
- Build A Fire Pit
Nothing beats hanging out by the fire pit on a warm summer night. You a buy a pre-assembled fire pit at most hardware or home and garden stores. You can also easily build your own with big stones, curved blocks, or bricks. Just make sure to pick the right area of your yard. It's important that your fire pit is placed on a flat area away from any low-hanging tree branches or shrubs. You'll also want to invest in some nice, durable outdoor seating to place around the pit.
- Freshen Up Your Front Door
Your front door is the focal point of your home, so you should always keep it in good shape. If your front door is fading or old, give it a nice refresh with a new coat of paint. If you're looking to change things up, switch to a bright, bold paint color. Then, top things off with a new spring wreath and a stylish welcome mat. - Add A New Mailbox
If your mailbox is faded or it's been dinged a couple of times, installing a new mailbox is an easy way to add some curb appeal to your property. Choose a mailbox that matches your facade. Go an extra step and plant a surrounding flower bed or some new shrubs.
- Create A Raised Garden
Many people think raised gardens are best suited for apartment buildings or home's without much yard space. However, raised gardens actually provide more control over the soil and better drainage. Just be sure to place it in an area that receives direct sun exposure. You can make your garden any height, but just remember that most plants need at least 10 inches of soil to grow properly.
- Start A Compost Pile
Gardens can really increase your curb appeal, and the secret to a beautiful garden is a well-balanced compost pile. Compost provides soil with nutrients that help plants grow healthy and strong. A compost pile starts with carbon (brown) materials like cardboard, branches, or leaves. Then, you add green nitrogen (green) materials like food scraps and grass trimmings. Keep your compost in a sturdy container and place it in an area of your yard that receives decent sun exposure. You'll also need to periodically rotate your compost to promote oxygen flow and decomposition.
